Guide to Walgreens Shopping

2. Saving the most amount of money possible at Walgreens requires that you know how to use their Register Rewards System. Register Rewards (Catalina coupons) are manufacturer coupons that offer a certain amount of money off your next shopping order.  These Register Rewards (RR’s)  print out of  a Catalina machine at the register after you have completed your transaction. In order to receive RR’s, you need to buy certain participating products that are advertised in their weekly ad or on signs posted throughout the store.

Ok, got everything so far? Here is where it may start to get a little bit confusing, so stick with me. Let’s say that you want to buy a Schick Razor that is on sale for $8 with $4 RR’s back. You also have a $4/1 manufacture’s coupon for the razor and a $4 RR from last week you’d like to use to pay for the razor. Well, since you only have one item to purchase and two MFR’s coupons to use on it, you’re going to need to buy another item because the MFR coupon: item ratio needs to be the same. You cannot use two MFR coupons on one item. So you need to purchase another item. It doesn’t need to be an expensive item—In fact, it could be the least expensive item in the store! You just need something to even out your coupon: item ratio. These inexpensive items often needed to even out the coupon: item ratio are called “fillers.”. So say you use a .33 caramel for your filler. When you go to check out, you’ll use the $4 MFR coupon on the razor and your $4 RR on the caramel. The total before tax will be .33 (the cost of your filler) and you’ll get $4 RR back (for purchasing the razor)! There, that wasn’t too hard now; was it? ;-)

Also, RR deals have a limit of 1 per transaction on them, which means that if you try to buy (using the razor example again) 2 razors in 1 transaction, you will only get $4 RR’s back—not $8! So if you’d like to buy 2 razors and get back RR’s for both, you need to purchase them in separate transactions. However, you can buy different RR items in the same transaction and still receive RR’s for both.

Another thing to remember is that Register Reward deals do not usually “roll.” This means that if you receive a $4 RR for buying a razor, you cannot use that RR to buy another razor and expect to get another $4 RR back. You CAN use RR’s to pay for other RR items, just as long as you are not “rolling” the SAME DEAL.

3. Pick up any Wag’s Coupon booklets (Such as the Wag’s Monthly IVC Booklet) you find in the store. Coupons found in booklets such as these can be stacked with manufacture’s coupons for even more savings!

4. Always make sure to hand over your coupons to the cashier in this order: manufacture coupons, store coupons, and then any register rewards you may have from previous transactions. This will allow your transactions to go smoother and quicker.

5. If your store is out of the item(S) you wish to buy, get a rain check! Note: if Wag’s is out of an item that gives register rewards, you are still able to get a rain check for the sale price of that item, but you’ll not be able to get the register rewards when you buy the item in the future.

6. Keep your eyes peeled for clearance tags. With a coupon, you may be able to get items greatly reduced or even free!
